Utilities

The following is a list of utilities for use with QuickDraw GX. Some of them are included with the QuickDraw GX package, others are either commercial software, shareware or public domain. There is a special section devoted to printing extensions.

You may download some of the following following utilities from the QuickDraw GX Fan Club's ftp site. If you know of any GX utilities that you don't see mentioned here, please mail me at ktrueman@adrenaline.ca. I try to keep as complete an archive as possible.

ClipStation
ClipStation acts primarily as a bridge between drag-and-drop and the Clipboard, but its display of Clipboard contents includes support for GX graphics. Try it together with SimpleView or GX Font Display. (version 1.1d1)

CurveLayoutGX
CurveLayoutGX is a control panel that allows you to bind text to a path in most GX and non-GX studly applications, just like you would in an illustration program like Illustrator. It is written by Aaron Muderick, an intern at Apple, chaperoned by Daniel Lipton for this little project. Please note that this software is not supported by Apple.

DTP Janitor
DTP Janitor makes sure there aren't any stray left-over desktop printer icons hiding around. If you ever had a system crash while creating a desktop printer, you might have trouble when you reboot. DTP Janitor will take care of the problem by getting rid of the partial printer icon. While Apple has allowed DTP Janitor to be distributed, note the following: "DTP Janitor is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."

GX Font Display
GX Font Display is a simple utility based on a hypercard stack, it allows you to see all the glyphs in any font under QuickDraw GX.

GX Helper
GX Helper allows you to disable printing with QuickDraw GX. It creates a selection in the Apple menu called "Disable Desktop Printing". This is useful if the application you are using doesn't get along with QuickDraw GX. Once selected, it tries to select your default printer before GX was installed. GX Helper only works with Apple's printer drivers. GX Helper is included with the QuickDraw GX installation package.

GX Write
GX Write is another application from Apple. With its button-bar, it looks alot like a traditional word processor. It doesn't offer stuff like spell-checking, it's mostly just a basic text editor. It does however allow you to take advantage of QuickDraw GX's typographical features. It has a little floating palette from which you can control type features like ligatures, etc. It also offers a slider for changing font width and weight. To understand the font controls available in GX Write and other GX-typography compatible apps, check out Using the GX controls. While Apple has allowed GX Write to be distributed, note the following: "GXWrite is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."

GXifier
GXifier allows you to transform TrueType fonts into GX fonts. The GXifier adds QuickDraw GX tables to the TrueType fonts you specify. Once these tables have been added, you will have access to all the glyphs in your fonts, including some you didn't have access to before, when you use applications that support QuickDraw GX typgraphy. Some of the documentation is in PDD format, requiring you to have GX installed to read it. GXifier is written by Dave Opstad of Apple. While Apple has allowed GXifier to be distributed, note the following: "GXifier is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."

OldPrint
OldPrint is an alternative to Apple's QuickDraw GX Helper. This allows you to disactiviate GX with non-Apple pre-GX printer drivers.

PaperType Editor
Apple also includes with the GX installation package a little utility called PaperType Editor. With it you can create pre-defined paper types for use with the printer drivers. Paper types are used in configuring the paper tray selections for desktop printers. There are 3 pre-made paper types that are part of the basic installation of GX 1.1.3: Letterhead, Stationery, and 3-Hole Punch. To create more, you use the PaperType Editor. PaperType Editor is not installed by the default install procedure, you must do a custom install of GX to install PaperType Editor

Poster GX
This wonderful little application allows you to get a feel for the possibilities of GX fonts. Written by Mike Reed of Apple, Poster GX (version 1.3) allows you to place text and try out the different possibilites that GX allows. It comes with slider bars to allow you to play with the weight and width of GX fonts. While Apple has allowed Poster GX to be distributed, note the following: "Poster GX is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price ..."

Present GX
Written by Mike Reed of Apple, Present GX is a very simple application for creating presentations. You import graphics and text via drag and drop. It exploits GX's advanced typography controls. And best of all, impress your friends by exporting the finished product as a QuickTime movie, and showing it to them on their non-GX Macs. Salivating ! While Apple has allowed Present GX to be distributed, note the following: "Present GX is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price ..."

SimpleView
SimpleView is an alternative PDD viewer to SimpleText. Available on Info-Mac servers, particularly Apple's Info-Mac mirror, it offers zooming capabilities and is extensively AppleScript-able and recordable. SimpleView includes some PDD-hacking functions that are only accessible via AppleScript. It also contains some sample graphics showing off some of the capabilities of QuickDraw GX. (version 0.5d1).

TrueEdit
TrueEdit (version 1.9.8) is a program from Apple that will also allow you to view the entire glyph palette of a GX font (or plain vanilla truetype ones too). It is sort of a "ResEdit" for TrueType and GX fonts. While there is no official documentation with it, a kind and generous Net citizen, Jason T. Newman, has undertaken to produce some documentation for TrueEdit in PDD format. (If you appreciate the effort send him a "thank you") While Apple has allowed TrueEdit to be distributed, note the following: "TrueEdit is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price ..." (TrueEdit is 884k binhexed.)

Type 1 Enabler
Type 1 Enabler is a font converter program that comes with GX. It allows you to prepare Type 1 fonts for use with QuickDraw GX. There is a more recent version of Type 1 Enabler than the one that shipped with QuickDraw GX 1.1.3. It's available at ftp.adobe.com.

Printing Extensions

Additions
Additions adds three functions to your GX printing choices. You can specify whether or not there is a page border, whether or not to serialize copies, as well as the order for printing a cover page. While Apple has allowed Additions to be distributed, note the following: "Additions" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

Back2Front
The Back2Front printing extension allows you to print a document in reverse order. While Apple has allowed Back2Front to be distributed, note the following: "Back2Front" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

Backgrounds
The Backgrounds printing extension allows you to insert watermarks in your document when you print. You can specify a text message, make it grey scale, and specify the angle of rotation. There is an option to insert an image as a watermark. While Apple has allowed Backgrounds to be distributed, note the following: "Backgrounds" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

Backwash
With Backwash, you can insert any PICT image as a background image in your document. It's basically a watermark utility. You can also set the intensity with which the image shows through. While Apple has allowed Backwash to be distributed, note the following: "Backwash" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

BoffinText
Boffintext is a QuickDraw GX printing extension. When an application calls the old printing manager, the BoffinText extension hooks in to alter the layout options. This allows you to access features in QuickDraw GX Fonts (like ligatures, swashes, etc.) even if your application does not support GX. Attention : BoffinText only works for applications that aren't using GX at all - even printing. While Apple has allowed BoffinText to be distributed, note the following: "BoffinText" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."

Confidential
The Confidential printing extension is another watermark utility. It allows you to insert the text-blurb of your choice as a background element. With Confidential, you can change the point size of the text to be inserted. While Apple has allowed Confidential to be distributed, note the following: "Confidential" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

Duplex Helper
Duplex Helper is a simple printing extension to help you do double-sided printing on single-sided printers.

EPS extension
This extension allows you to output EPS files like you would normally do with the LaserWriter 8 chooser extension. EPS extension is included with the QuickDraw GX installation package. To install the EPS extension, you need to do a Custom Install.

Filters
The Filters printing extension allows you some control over what gets printed out in a document and how. You can print coloured shapes in white or in grayscale, not print text shapes, print bitmaps as rectangles, print lines as hairlines, and control text metrics. While Apple has allowed Filters to be distributed, note the following: "Filters" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

N-Up Printing
N-Up printing allows you to print many pages on the same page, allowing you to save on Paper. You can print out 2, 4, 8 or 16 pages all on one page. The N-Up printing extension is included with the QuickDraw GX installation package.

Peirce Print Tools
Peirce Print Tools is a set of printer extensions for QuickDraw GX. Made by Peirce Software, these extensions add all sorts of neat functions to GX. When you print, you can access functions like N-Up printing, borders, watermarks, ink-saving, etc. You can get it to generate a printing log if you'd like to know who prints what on a shared office printer. You can then use the log with Filemaker Pro, for example. The nice thing about Peirce Print Tools is that you can access its functions even when you're not using a GX-savvy application. PPT installs a little menu in the menu bar when you are in the application's print dialog box. You still get access to all its great features, unlike most of the printing extensions offered by Apple. You can also check out a press release for Peirce Print Tools.

PSFontHelper
The PSFontHelper should correct a problem with using non-GX apps that do partial font-downloading (like Ilustrator and QuarkXpress). It should solve the problem where some applicatins draw boxes where they should draw text. While QuickDraw GX 1.1.x has an internal list of applications that do not support partial font-downloading, it may not be up to date on newer applications, ex : Freehand 5.5. This extension lets a user simply add applications to the existing list of apps to not do partial font downloading for. The extension works by disabling partial font downloading for the application. The extension adds an item to the printing menu called "Font Helper Settings" which brings up a dialog where you can add to or remove from the list of applications. PSFontHelper is written by Daniel Lipton of Apple. While Apple has allowed PSFontHelper to be distributed, note the following: "PSFontHelper" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price...".

PSMirrorFile
PSMirrorFile simply mirrors the output that GX sends to the printer into a file and records any messages coming back from the printer into another file. The files that get created (In your extensions folder every time you print) are called "xxx-log.ps" and "xxx-err.ps" where "xxx" is the name of the desktop printer icon. The "log" is data GX sends to the printer, the "err" is the printer response. (whether or not an error occurred, so you will see answers to font queries and so on in there too.) (description of PSMirrorFile by Daniel Lipton of Apple). While Apple has allowed PSMirrorFile to be distributed, note the following: "PSMirrorFile" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."

Spooling
Spooling allows you to spool your print jobs off to another folder other than Print Monitor Documents. While Apple has allowed Spooling to be distributed, note the following: "Spooling" is provided without any warranty, express or implied. It's freeware, and worth every penny of its price..."
